Nussbaum’s is a traditional Kosher Butchery with a difference.
Having been tempted with visuals of delicious pastrami sandwiches on TV for years, the moment I spotted a couple of pictures of the food on offer at Nussbaum’s I knew I couldn’t resist and needed to pop in to sink my teeth into their signature ‘Hot Beef on Rye’.
Nussbaum’s a family run butchery has been a leader in the kosher meat industry since it was established in 1936. Started by the Nussbaum brothers the butchery was later bought by the Lurie family in 1973 (who kept the name) and has been passed from generation to generation ever since. It is now in the capable hands of Baruch Lurie who joined the family business in 2006.
If you’re planning a visit keep in mind that Nussbaum’s has two locations: A factory store in Rouxville and the deli/retail store I visited in Glenhazel which was opened in June 2016.
Nussbaum’s is Mehadrin under the supervision of the Johannesburg Beth Din.
I arrived at Nussbaum’s on a Sunday just after the lunch rush and set myself up at a table inside. After a quick tour of the shop and a chat to some of the staff, my food had arrived.
Hot Beef on Rye + Chips: The ‘Hot Beef on Rye’ is without a doubt a must-have! It’s two slices of lightly toasted rye filled with beef, pickle, sauerkraut and mustard and is pretty much everything I expected it to be. The chips are super crispy and really good on their own but are taken to another level with a splash of vinegar and a pinch of salt. If you need something extra to dip them in, they come with a selection of sauces (tomato sauce, mustard, perinaise and currynaise). The last two are made in-house.
I also tried the Smash Burger and the Hot Dog, both of which are really good but I think you need to have these without having had the Hot Beef on Rye to truly appreciate what they offer.
Other items you’ll find on the menu include the pulled beef sandwich, a chicken schnitzel ciabatta and the Argentinian steak roll.
The food is served ready for ‘takeaway’ so there is no need to ask for a ‘doggy bag’. The service is fast and the staff are super friendly and helpful.
The store not only has a huge selection of fresh meat products but also a wide variety of other products including wine, precooked items, salads, home-made soups, freshly baked perogen and challah, pareve puddings and ice creams as well as shwarma spices and even Shabbat candles. They are basically a “one-stop Shabbos shop”.
