Having never driven a Peugeot before I was super excited and went into my #FeelPeugeot weekend with no preconceived ideas or expectations. Now it’s important to note that this is the first SUV from the French car manufacturer since 2013 so I was more than a little excited to drive the car.
I was lucky enough to test the GT Line 1.2 Puretech petrol model delivering 81kW with Stop-Start technology linked to a six-speed automatic transmission. This will set you back around R349 900.00. I was impressed with the 3-cylinder engine which was surprisingly punchy and responsive.
The new Peugeot 2008 is a good looking car. The looks are sporty yet rugged with a black chrome radiator grille with red Peugeot lettering, assertive bonnet, roof rails, rear spoiler and 17″ alloy wheels adding to the look. The black and chrome headlights with integrated LED running lights and rear light clusters with a ‘3D claw’ design complete the look.
The sporty looks continue into the cabin with sports pedals, sleek leather seats with red stitching, a compact sports steering wheel and a head-up instrument panel with red LED dial surrounds. A touch of luxury is added with the inclusion of mood lighting and a large 7” multifunction colour touch screen. The interior is spacious up front and in the back with ample space for people over six feet.
The Peugeot 2008 comes with Apple CarPlay® functionality which was easy to setup and worked well. It gave me access to phone functions without me having to remove my hands from the wheel. The standout feature for me, and yes it’s probably the simplest, has got to be the electronic ‘kiddie lock button’. This would have saved many a headache in the past.
The vehicle is manoeuvrable and steering is precise although I did find it a bit twitchy at higher speeds. I also found the cruise control slightly frustrating because I couldn’t see it through the steering wheel and had to figure it out with touch, but once I figured it out it worked like a dream.
Overall the entire family was impressed with the new 2008 SUV with numerous requests from my seven-year-old to buy one.
